Music Library app icon: a vinyl record and a music note on a sunset gradient

Free and open source · macOS, iPhone and Apple Watch

Your music collection,
finally treated right.

A native macOS music library for people who care about their files. Import and rip, tag everything from MusicBrainz, play bit-perfect, explore your collection in ways streaming apps don't let you, and find your next CD at the public library.

macOS 14 or later · Apple Silicon and Intel · Signed and notarized by Apple

Build the library

Import FLAC, MP3, M4A, WAV and AIFF, or rip CDs to FLAC. Every track is matched on MusicBrainz and filed neatly.

Explore it

Rich album and artist pages, a search language that understands music, Music DNA and Insights.

Play it

Bit-perfect output at each song's own sample rate, a real play queue, smart playlists and Last.fm.

Borrow more

Browse your public library's CDs with the same search, hear previews, and see what's on the shelf right now.

Import & rip

Import anything. Keep it tidy.

Drop in files and folders. Each track is matched against MusicBrainz, optionally by audio fingerprint via AcoustID. Confident matches are applied automatically; the rest wait in the Import queue with candidates to pick from.

  • Rich metadata and credits: players, producers, engineers, writers
  • Cover art from the Cover Art Archive, or your own image
  • Insert a CD and it's identified by its table of contents, then ripped to FLAC
  • Your original files are never modified

Albums & artists

Pages worth reading.

Album pages show the full release track list, including what you're missing, plus descriptions, community ratings, genres, credits, release details and links to reviews. Artist pages bring photos, bios, stats, links to dozens of sites and upcoming concerts near you.

All of it is fetched once from MusicBrainz, Wikipedia, Wikidata and Last.fm, and kept locally.

Music DNA

Follow the people behind the music.

See who played, wrote and produced with whom across your library. Click a bubble to put that person at the center, choose how many levels of connections to show, and click your way from one collaborator to the next. Any name in the app opens it.

Insights

Know your collection. And your habits.

Everything is clickable.

Playback

Hear exactly what's in the file.

The output device follows each track's sample rate and bit depth, and the original format is restored when you quit.

A real play queue

Play Next and Add to Queue from any song, album, artist or playlist. Drag to reorder; the queue survives a restart. The player expands into a full Now Playing view.

Playlists, smart and not

Arrange regular playlists yourself, or define smart ones with a search. Liked Songs is built in.

History and Last.fm

Plays and time listened per song, album and artist, with optional scrobbling and an offline queue.

Concerts near you

Upcoming shows by the artists in your library, from Ticketmaster and JamBase, including small clubs and independent venues.

Take it with you

Copy albums, artists and playlists to a USB player or drive in the library's own layout, with .m3u playlists. Nothing is ever overwritten.

Fix missing covers

Pick one from the Cover Art Archive, drop in an image or paste one, and optionally embed it in the album's files.

Your public library's CDs

Your next favorite album might be free.

Browse the music CDs of a public library catalog run on Aspen Discovery, like the Minuteman Library Network, with the libraries that own each one and what's on the shelf right now.

  • The whole catalog downloaded and searched on your Mac: genre:jazz decade:60s -is:owned is:available
  • Each CD matched on MusicBrainz by barcode for its cover, track list, rating and description
  • 30-second previews from Apple Music, no account needed
  • Your checkouts, and CDs added to your library lists for the next visit
  • Marked when it's already in your library, even when the catalog spells it differently

iPhone

Your whole library, in your pocket.

Browse everything on your iPhone, with the Mac's album and artist pages, Music DNA and Insights. Download what you want over Wi-Fi from the phone itself and play it offline, through a USB DAC at each song's own sample rate, with gapless playback.

Two-way Wi-Fi sync

Pair once with a code. Likes, plays and albums you own come back to the Mac; syncs are encrypted with a key only your devices know.

Hi-res on the go

16/44.1, 24/96, 24/192: Now Playing shows the file's format and the rate your DAC is running at.

Same search, same scrobbles

Playlists, Liked Songs and Last.fm scrobbling, including what you play offline.

Widgets & Apple Watch

A glance away.

Home and lock screen widgets show what's playing, with controls that work without opening the app, how much you've listened lately, your streak and top albums, what you've bought and a favorite to rediscover. The Apple Watch app is a remote for the iPhone's player, with complications for listening time and the song playing.

Themes

Make it yours.

Follow the system, or pick a palette you already love from your editor. Every theme is checked for contrast.

Privacy

Your library stays yours.

The library, your listening history and your settings stay on your Mac, in one folder you can copy to a new Mac. No sign-up, and no cloud service of its own.

The app only talks to services to look things up: MusicBrainz, the Cover Art Archive and Wikipedia, plus AcoustID, Last.fm, Ticketmaster or JamBase only if you add a key. API keys, secrets and your library PIN live in your keychain.

The iPhone keeps its music out of iCloud backups and syncs with your Mac over your local network, encrypted with a key the two exchange when pairing.
